FSSAI Registration: Updates and Recent Changes

The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) is the regulatory body responsible for ensuring the safety and quality of food products in India. FSSAI registration is mandatory for all food business operators (FBOs) in the country. In recent years, several updates and changes have been introduced by FSSAI to enhance food safety regulations and streamline the registration process.

Online Registration:

One significant change introduced by FSSAI is the implementation of an online registration system. FBOs can now register and apply for licenses through the FSSAI's online portal. This digital platform has made the registration process faster, more efficient, and easily accessible for FBOs across the country.

Revised License Categories:

FSSAI has made revisions to the license categories, categorizing FBOs based on their scale of operations. The three main categories are:

a. Basic FSSAI Registration: For FBOs with an annual turnover of up to INR 12 lakhs.

b. State FSSAI License: For FBOs with an annual turnover between INR 12 lakhs and INR 20 crores.

c. Central FSSAI License: For FBOs with an annual turnover exceeding INR 20 crores.

This revision has simplified the licensing process and made it more appropriate for different types of FBOs.

Third-Party Auditing:

FSSAI has introduced the concept of third-party auditing to ensure compliance with food safety standards. FBOs are now required to undergo regular audits conducted by accredited third-party agencies. This helps in maintaining transparency, credibility, and accountability in the food industry.

Labeling and Display Requirements:

FSSAI has tightened the regulations related to the labeling and display of food products. FBOs must adhere to specific guidelines regarding ingredient listing, nutritional information, allergen declaration, and mandatory FSSAI logo display on the product packaging. These changes help consumers make informed choices about the food products they purchase.

Food Import Regulations:

FSSAI has strengthened the regulations related to food imports into India. It has imposed stricter quality checks and testing procedures for imported food products to ensure they meet Indian food safety standards. These measures protect consumers from substandard or unsafe imported food items.
